One thing old photos has in common is that they often have lots of fine scratches and other small damage. This is to be expected if you haven’t kept your photos in an album their whole life. No matter how badly scratched your photo is though, with a little photo restoration you can get amazing results. The photo below had many fine scratches and dust specks, but as you can see in the finished photo any trace of the damages are gone. Now let’s get started with the tutorial, I’ll first go through which tools to use and when to use them, then I’ll show you step by step my methods of repairing scratches and tears using these tools.

Hi Dan, I was wondering, in your “Tools of the Trade” section, you did not mention
any requirements for the computer we should use. I am using an IMac, with 8 GB of
memory. Is there a guideline on how much memory we should have?
Thanks
Robert
Robert, thanks for your feedback. I’ve updated the “Tools of the Trade” section with information on computer requirements.
Generally it all depends on how many images you plan to work with at the same time and how large resolutions you are working with.
You should be more than fine with 8GB, I get along just fine with 4GB on my computer and have worked with much less through the years.
Regards,
Dan
