Red Color Cast Removed

Before & After

Sooner or later you will find a photo that has a slight color cast, often red. This is one of the most common damages you’ll encounter on old photos. The easiest way to notice this is to look at areas in your photo that are supposed to be white. If the white has a slight color cast, you need to adjust the color balance. Another name for this adjustment is white balance. Removing the color cast isn’t hard and in this tutorial I’ll show you how to restore the color in an easy way. This method applies to faded black and white photos as well, as you can see in the photo below.

Now let’s start the tutorial! We will be using the same tool and principles in both GIMP and Photoshop, so you can expect the same results no matter which software you have.

Now when you have a photo with natural looking colors, then what? If your photo looks dull and flat you might want to adjust the contrast and tones, which I show you how to do in Module 1 of Photo Restoration School. If you’re happy with the colors and contrast then head over to Module 3 to continue the photo restoration process!

I’m really enjoying this. Dan is making it so very simple. My only niggle is that I use PhotoPlus X5 and I would really appreciate Dan incorporating some hints in using that too.
