How To Change Overall Brightness And Contrast

by Dan on June 12, 2011

In this photo restoration tutorial I’ll show you how to adjust the brightness and contrast of a photo the way professionals do, a way which gives you lots of control and tweak-ability. We’ll not be using the Levels tool in this tutorial! As you can see in the photo below it’s faded and dull, it’s lost it’s spark. This tutorial is easy and after watching the video instructions and preferably also reading through the step-by-step instructions you should be a master of brightness and contrast control!

As you can see there’s some uneven exposure in the right corners and the bottom part of the image and that is not uncommon for old images. That can be corrected using the Burn tool, which I show you how to use in another Module 1 tutorial.
